Fast Facts About Acne - Myths to Uncover!

Let's take a look at some other popular beliefs about acne to dispel any other rumors; for example, stress. Is it true that increased stress spreads acne? Not exactly. What is true is that ultimately stress can have a very minimal or minor influence all by itself. It cannot actually cause acne, but it can influence reoccurrences of acne as stress increases the body's creation of a substance called cortisol that in turn causes your sebaceous glands to produce increased amounts of sebum oil that can be blocked in pores. Note, however, that some medications people take when trying to deal with or treat stress can have a large influence on acne as the result of medication side effects.

Acne is contagious, true or false? Not! No one can "catch" acne; it is non-communicable.

You'll outgrow acne, so just leave it along; myth or truth? This is false. Acne strikes all ages and is treatable, but shouldn't be left alone to possibly worsen.

Being out in the sun helps acne, right? In the long run, no. The sun may appear to help clear up your blemishes and redden your skin, thus lessening the overall reddish effect of the targeted acne area when it was outstanding. However, rays from the sun can cause skin damage and actually irritate skin more, worsening any existing acne problems in the process and clogging more pores as skin cells dry up and slough off quicker than normal. So use caution (and sunscreen) here!

Sweating helps clean out your hair follicle areas, myth or reality? Another myth. In reality, strenuous activity can temporarily increase your body's oil production that can actually worsen acne problem areas, causing recurrence or intensification.

Acne problems are directly proportionate to sexual activity, or lack thereof; true or false? False, another myth. Just because teenagers are going through hormonal changes, does not mean that this has anything to do with acne. Both are separate issues. Same with adult acne and sex; two entirely different issues.

People with acne are dirty and don't wash enough. Not! This is another myth. Acne is the result of a build up of oil, dead skin cells and bacteria in a closed pore. Period. Dirt is not even a factor in the equation.

Acne is only on external issue or surface deep; i.e. people shouldn't make such a big thing out of it, myth or reality? Myth. In reality, yes, it basically is only on your skin (and underneath the surface a little bit). However, the effects run much more deeper than that in many instances. More than 50 percent of those suffering acne problems reported negative comments and other feedback from members of society, regardless of whether or not there was any scarring left for others to see afterwards. And resulting internal depression and low self-esteem can be harmful emotionally not only short-term but over a person's lifetime. So acne can indeed be a very big issue requiring healthcare treatment and support.

OK, myth or reality: there is a cure for acne? Myth. Although there is no cure at this time, there are many treatments available that do a great job. As the saying goes, "Prevention is the best medicine;" however, there is no need to suffer in silence with all the options available on the market today for all price ranges.

Certain cosmetics or spot treatments will help acne, myth or reality? Myth again. By the time a blemish appears, it has been in the works for a good couple of weeks.

Myth or not: people with acne should not use moisturizers or other make-up products on their faces? Myth! Today there are many noncomedogenic cosmetics out there specially formulated to NOT clog pores.

Eat Your Way To Clear Skin With An Acne Diet

There are Many conflicting theories about an anti-acne diet. Many doctors ignore this matter completely, while a lot of magazines offer "perfect" and "100% sure" acne diets. Where's the truth? Is there any diet that can really cure acne?

Theoretically, it is possible that a diet can affect this disease. Since the underlying cause of acne is hormonal instability, we can try to repair it by constructing a diet that will stimulate the production of certain hormones and reducing the quantity of others. However for practical reasons it is very difficult to create a working anti-acne diet. Some food has to be eaten in such quantity to have an effect that it is simply impossible to do that. Some kinds of food should be avoided because of acne, but have to be eaten because of the nutritional value. And, let's face it, sometimes acne is so severe that no diet could help.

Tips and guidelines

While it's not practical to create a complete anti-acne diet, there are a few tips and guidelines you can follow.

1. Avoid any androgenic hormones in your food. Androgenic hormones tell your skin's oil glands just how much sebum or skin oil to excrete. DHEA, testosterone, androstenedione should be avoided at all cost - all of them are known to increase the symptoms of acne. Your diet should be completely hormone-free, or as close to it as possible.

2. Don't drink an excessive amount of milk when you have acne. There are lots of hormones in milk of pregnant cows, and that is the majority of marketed milk and dairy products. If you reduce the quantity of milk in your diet, you will probably minimize the amount of hormones you intake. Progesterone, 5-alpha reduced steroids, and other steroid hormones when digested can break down into DHT, the final molecule that turns on the oil cells in the skin.

3. If you suffer from acne, think about increasing the quantity of fish in your diet. Most fish has very important omega-3 oils that improve health of your skin.

4. It is said that Vitamin E may sometimes worsen acne symptoms, so avoiding it in your diet may help you get rid of the disease. However, there are no hard facts to support for that idea.

5. Avoid sugar. It is known to increase the symptoms of acne.

6. Don't expect miracles. No anti-acne diet can cure the disease by itself.
You are unlikely to eat yourself free of acne, but good eating habits and a healthy lifestyle will certainly help

Dry Pimples Fast, Destroy Acne!

Clear, blemish free skin in no time!

Pimples and zits are the products of bacteria and clogged pores. When you see a white head, the thing you squeeze and white stuff comes out of it, that is a mix of dead bacteria, blood, and the white blood cells that combatted the bacteria... the mixture is known as pus. If you must squeeze, make sure your hands are clean or you use a pimple tool. Due to the way the blood vessels in the face lead directly to drainage sinuses in the head, it has been known to occur that if you squeeze a pimple, it can lead to an infection and even meningitis... So squeeze at your own discretion. I do believe it is better to let the pimple pop when it is ripe (whiteheaded). Some pimples after treatment go away on their own but before they do, they are hard lumps beneath the skin and when they go away, they leave a faint scar.

To prevent pimples, I suggest sleep and drinking plenty of water each day, at least eight cups. During menstruation, however, due to hormone levels and changes, many females have acne. I do not know if it is true, but eating hot peppers and very oil foods may lead to pimples as well.

Overall, try not to touch your face so often. Your hands and fingers are so dirty, it's just disgusting to add oil and germs to the pores in your skin. Having oily skin leads to breakouts, yes. Still, dry skin is uncomfortable. The following is not foolproof but it will work.

Wash your face daily with a soap. A good soap is Clinique Antibacterial Facial Soap. Follow with a toner or an astringent. After that, apply an oil-free lotion. Once a week or twice, clean your t-zone with a scrub. That will exfoliate your skin and clear some pores.

To treat pimples and zits that are incredibly big, ice them. This will not cure them but it will lessen the redness. I have heard about applying toothpaste and even wart-remover salicylic acid, but that stings and the labels on plantar wart removers say specifically to not apply them on the face. I have also heard about Cortisone or red-remover eyedrops to ease the redness of zits.

Finally, if you do have zits and they are killing your social life, just wear them proudly because underneath the blemish is clear skin and one day, you will have clear skin, unless something is wrong with you genetically. After all, if someone doesn't like you because of how you look, that person is not a good anything at all, be he or she a friend or relative or crush or love.

Still, if you take care of your skin and prevent breakouts, it will only be a matter of time and persistence that will bring the results you seek. Hope this helps.

Don't Pinch That Pimple

It’s everyone’s worst nightmare. Waking up the day before a special event to discover a big, red pimple baring itself for all to see right on your face!

Here’s how to get rid of it quickly and safely:

1. Don’t ever pinch, squeeze or pick at a pimple. This only causes it to become more red and inflamed, and will spread the bacteria and oils that caused it in the first place, to other parts of your face! It can also lead to scars.

2. Every 30 minutes, apply an ice pack to the pimple and hold it there for about 2 minutes. This will decrease the swelling and redness and help shrink the inflammation and pain that sometimes comes along with it.

3. They don’t call it concealer for nothing! Covering the pimple with a light dose of flesh-tinted concealer can help mask it when you’re in a hurry. It also helps cover up that oily shine.

4. Cleanse your skin 2-3 times a day with mild, unscented soap or a specialized acne cleanser that has no harsh chemicals (such as lye). Scrub skin gently with an exfoliating pad or washcloth, but don’t rub too hard, otherwise you’ll sap your skin of its own natural oils, which help to repel buildup naturally.

5. Apply a cream or ointment containing benzyl peroxide or salicylic acid (many over-the-counter acne medicines contain these ingredients) to the blemish or around the entire facial area. Note that these ingredients both have a tendency to dry out skin if used too much and are not recommended if you have sensitive skin.

6. Wear oil-free makeup whenever possible. These types have less of a tendency to cause the pore buildup that results in blemishes. Remove your makeup nightly and cleanse with an acne-fighting medicine to remove dirt, oil and makeup from deep within the skin.

7. If you’re in need of a quick fix, a dab of toothpaste on the affected area right before bed can help soothe irritation and reduce redness. Pressing and holding a wet tea bag or a cotton ball with a dab of lemon juice against the blemish for five minutes can also reduce swelling and redness.

If you follow these tips, chances are you’ll notice a significant difference rather quickly – often within a day or two. If pimples become a recurring problem or worsen, your doctor or dermatologist can suggest a daily skin cleansing routine that will suit your skin type. Other long-term remedies, such as facial masks, diet adjustments and increasing the amount of water you drink can also help combat outbreaks.

Do Staph Infections Cause Acne Breakouts

There is no simple answer to this question. All acne is caused by some sort of infection. It can be due to clogged pores becoming infected, or an infection under the skin that can cause acne on the surface.

Staph infections can manifest themselves on the skin, in the form of eruptions that are pus-filled and look like boils. But, if the eruptions are smaller, they can be more like zits or pimples.

Typically, more than one eruption will be present, and they can be present in one or more areas on the body. They can be painful and very unsightly.

These eruptions are different than normal acne in that they are not caused by pores clogging and becoming infected. Therefore, normal acne treatments like topical Benzoyl peroxide will not be effective in treating the breakout.

If you have a staph infection, you will need a doctor to diagnose it and treat it. Antibiotics MUST be prescribed in order to cure a staph infection.

How do you tell if you have a staph infection or if it is just regular acne? It can be hard to tell the difference, but some signs to look for are eruptions in places you do not normally get pimples. For instance, if you occasionally get pimples, but only on your chin, then suddenly you start to experience eruptions on your cheeks or forehead, it may not be simple acne.

Everyone’s skin is different, and only you know how your skin usually behaves. If you see signs that something unusual is happening, then you should check with your doctor to find out the cause.
